What is a gastroenterologist?
Gastroenterologists(GIs) are physicians that specialize in treating your gastrointestinal (GI) health needs.
Your GI tract includes your mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus.
A GI physician is licensed to diagnose and treat common syndromes such as:

GI specialists can perform the following procedures:
- endoscopicultrasound to look inside your GI tract
- colonoscopyto look at your large intestine (colon)
- endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
- sigmoidoscopyto look at a specific part of your colon called thesigmoid colon
- liver biopsyto take a tissue sample of your liver for diagnosis or testing
- double balloonenteroscopyto inflate inside your GI tract to get a better look
- pancreas scan to check for pancreas abnormalities orconditions
- liver scanto check for liver abnormalities
